This recall has sparked public discussion on whether kitchen paper towels can safely come into contact with food 1.
Despite these concerns, kitchen paper towels from multiple brands, including Xinxiangyin, Vinda, Jierou, Qingfeng, Tempo, and Babu, are labeled as "safe to contact food" and comply with the recommended national standard GB/T 26174-2023 "Kitchen Paper Towels" 1. In contrast, the mandatory national standard GB 4806.8-2022 "National Food Safety Standard for Paper and Paperboard Materials and Articles in Contact with Food" imposes stricter requirements on residues, microbial limits, and the use of additives 1. Zhong Huaining, an expert from the drafting group of the GB 4806.8-2022 standard, stated, "Kitchen paper towels are primarily designed for wiping and cleaning the kitchen, not for contacting food, and the public is advised not to use them to directly wrap or place food" 1. He added, "If there is a specific need, specialized food-contact paper should be chosen" 1.
