Extreme drought has pushed the Danube River to historically low water levels, causing dozens of Nazi German warships intentionally sunk by German forces to re-emerge from the riverbed.[1] The dramatic drop in water levels has also forced power plants along the river's course toward shutdown and severely disrupted navigation, prompting central and eastern European nations to implement emergency measures to conserve electricity.[1]
Around 200 German vessels were deliberately scuttled in September 1944 in the Danube Gorge near Prahovo, Serbia, and now sit exposed as the river recedes.[1] The waterway, Europe's second-longest river, flows through 10 countries, and shipping has become nearly impossible—a local resident from Prahovo stated that "big ships cannot pass anymore."[1] Experts attribute the unusual heat and resulting drought to global warming and other contributing factors.[1]
