Hebrew SeniorLife Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research开展,已发表于《营养、健康和衰老杂志》。1
A pilot study suggests that older adults consuming blueberries daily for three months experienced more pronounced reductions in depressive symptoms, accompanied by changes in gut microbial enzyme genes that point to a potential gut-brain connection.1 However, the mood improvement in the blueberry group compared to the placebo group was not statistically significant.1
The research involved 18 participants aged 65 and older who were physically inactive and exhibited mild depressive symptoms.1 Those assigned to the blueberry intervention consumed 48 grams of blueberry powder daily—equivalent to approximately two cups of fresh berries—over the three-month period.1 The placebo group consisted of eight participants with a mean age of 75±6 years, while the blueberry group included ten participants with a mean age of 71±4 years.1
Notably, the blueberry group demonstrated statistically significant changes in the abundance of multiple gut microbial enzymes, including EC 3.6.3.31 polyamine transport ATPase, which participates in the generation of the neurotransmitter GABA.1 According to lead author Courtney L. Millar, "the fiber and anthocyanins in blueberries have the potential to alter the gut microbiota and metabolites associated with depression in older adults."1 The findings were published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging on October 18, 2026.1
