Researchers from University College Cork's APC Microbiome Institute have published findings in Nature Communications demonstrating that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee alter the composition of gut microbiota and influence brain function through the gut-brain axis 1. The controlled trial involved 62 participants—31 regular coffee drinkers and 31 non-coffee drinkers—who were monitored to assess how coffee consumption affects mood, stress, memory, and attention 1.
The study showed that when regular coffee consumers stopped drinking coffee for two weeks, significant changes occurred in their intestinal metabolites 1. Upon resuming coffee intake, participants experienced reduced stress and depression symptoms 1. The research revealed distinct benefits depending on coffee type: decaffeinated coffee was associated with improvements in learning and memory, while caffeinated coffee correlated with decreased anxiety and enhanced alertness and attention 1. Both varieties of coffee were linked to lower levels of stress, depression, and impulsivity 1.
According to European Food Safety Authority standards, the researchers defined safe moderate coffee consumption as three to five cups daily 1. The study was sponsored by the International Scientific Information Institute for Coffee (ISIC) 1.
