Maria Alyokhina, the 38-year-old co-founder of Russian punk band Pussy Riot, has opened up about her personal life and values in a recent interview ahead of her appearance at a Sydney festival.[1] The activist became pregnant at 18 and gave birth to her son Philip, now 19 years old.[1] In 2022, she relocated her son from Russia to Iceland, where he was granted citizenship, to protect him from military conscription.[1]
Alyokhina's journey has been marked by political persecution and family sacrifice.[1] In 2012, she was sentenced to two years in prison for a protest performance at a Moscow cathedral.[1] Her father, Vladimir, a university professor who supported her throughout her imprisonment, passed away last year from Parkinson's disease.[1] During a third criminal case against her in 2025, police conducted a search of her father's apartment at 6 a.m.[1]
When asked about her romantic preferences, Alyokhina described her "type" as "unhinged and gloriously crazy" people who are fundamentally kind, noting that gender and nationality are irrelevant to her.[1] She is scheduled to appear at the Sydney Dangerous Ideas Festival on August 22–23.[1]
