The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency plans to spend up to $20 million on thousands of G.L.O.V.E. devices—gloves capable of delivering electric shocks—with procurement expected to be completed by March.[1] The devices, manufactured by a Kentucky-based company, have already been adopted by some prisons and police departments.[1]
Civil rights advocates have expressed concern about the acquisition. Jenn Rolnick Borchetta of the American Civil Liberties Union stated that "ICE has demonstrated over the past year that they are too quick to resort to violence, and now they will be able to deliver electric shocks with the push of a button, potentially without anyone witnessing them do so."[1] The criticism comes against a backdrop of recent fatal encounters involving ICE agents: at least ten people have died following contact with immigration officials since the start of the current administration.[1] These deaths include Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, 25, who was shot last month; Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, who was killed by an ICE officer in Houston; and American citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were fatally shot during a Minneapolis protest in January.[1]
