Iran has stated it will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz unless the United States meets a series of demands.[1] The Iranian conditions include requiring the United States to cease threats against Iran, compensate for war damages, permanently end military operations against Iran and its regional allies, lift blockades on Iranian ports and vessels in the strait, withdraw military forces from the region, lift sanctions, and release frozen Iranian assets.[1]
Beyond the military and diplomatic requirements, Iran has also announced plans to levy transit fees on commercial vessels passing through the waterway to fund maritime services.[1] However, the actual reopening of the strait remains contingent on negotiations with Washington. Iran is also conducting parallel discussions with Oman regarding passage through the strait, potentially including the establishment of temporary shipping corridors.[1] Meanwhile, U.S. officials have downplayed the prospect of substantive talks, with the Trump administration characterizing current interactions as merely a "semi-negotiation" state rather than major negotiations.[1]
The Strait of Hormuz, at its narrowest point approximately 39 kilometers wide, was the conduit for roughly 20 percent of global oil supplies before the conflict intensified.[1]
