A data analyst has compiled and examined approximately 50,000 vessel names extracted from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Automatic Identification System (AIS) broadcast data.[1] The dataset represents a sample drawn from roughly 150,000 unique vessels and reveals the creative and often humorous naming conventions adopted by boat owners.[1]
The vessels in the sample are dominated by yachts, which account for 43 percent of the dataset, followed by cargo ships at 14 percent.[1] According to a 2018 U.S. Coast Guard survey, approximately 12 percent of American households, or about 14.5 million, own or co-own recreational boats.[1] Among boat owners, the demographic composition is 82.9 percent white and 0.8 percent Black American.[1] Annual operating costs for vessels typically range between $15,000 and $40,000.[1]
