Don Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history, died Sunday at age 86.[1] During his playing career with the Boston Celtics, Nelson won five NBA championships.[1] As a coach, he accumulated 1,335 career victories, earning three NBA Coach of the Year awards and leading teams to the playoffs 18 times across 31 seasons.[1] He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.[1]
Nelson's coaching tenure spanned nearly five decades, during which he directed multiple franchises to sustained success.[2] With the Milwaukee Bucks, where he coached for 11 seasons between 1976 and 1987, he won two of his three Coach of the Year honors and compiled 540 regular season victories that set a franchise record.[2] He also coached the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks, accumulating over 250 wins with each organization.[1] His tenure with the Warriors produced the memorable 2007 "We Believe" team that upset the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks as an eighth seed.[2]
Nelson's influence on basketball extended beyond his winning record. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stated that "he sparked a revolution in NBA basketball with his fearless, intelligent and determined approach to the game."[2] His impact on player development was particularly noted by those he coached; Stephen Curry credited Nelson with being instrumental in his selection by the Warriors, while Dirk Nowitzki acknowledged that Nelson "not only drafted me, but believed in me."[2] In 2025, Nelson was posthumously awarded the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award.[1]
