The European Union's Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen convened meetings with major social media platforms to address the spread of false information during the Ceuta border crisis.[1] Approximately 72,000 people crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, with some drawn by misleading claims circulated on social networks.[1] The misinformation campaign falsely promised that EU borders in Ceuta had suddenly opened and offered housing and bus transport to mainland Spain.[1]
The border crisis resulted in significant loss of life, though accounts vary substantially. Spanish authorities reported 80 deaths, while Moroccan officials cited 11 fatalities, and human rights organizations estimated the total exceeded 140 deaths.[1] The false information spread across multiple platforms, including TikTok, Telegram, and Meta services.[1] Following meetings held on Friday with representatives from TikTok and Meta, Virkkunen stated: "Platforms must act decisively in keeping the integrity of the digital space, in particular during crisis situations."[1] The EU called on the platforms to strengthen their content moderation efforts and enhance cooperation with fact-checking organizations during periods of crisis.[1]
