Brazilian federal police have formally charged 16 current and former employees of Voepass airline in connection with a plane crash on August 9, 2024, that killed 62 people, including 58 passengers and 4 crew members.[1] The aircraft, an ATR 72-500 twin-engine turboprop, spiraled down from 13,000 feet near the city of Vinhedo outside São Paulo.[1]
According to the investigation completed over two years, the plane's de-icing system experienced repeated failures or manual shutdowns across 136 flights prior to the crash.[1] The aircraft was improperly cleared for takeoff despite known severe icing conditions at the time.[1] Among those charged is José Luiz Felicio Filho, the airline's owner and president.[1] Those accused face potential prison sentences of up to 12 years.[1] Lead investigator André Ribeiro noted this represents "a turning point in our aerial disasters here."[1] The crash marked Brazil's deadliest aviation accident since 2007.[1]
