Western Australia's Premier Roger Cook defended Labor's Secret Harbour by-election candidate Georgia Terri after she was prevented from speaking to media at two government announcement events over the weekend.[1] Terri was blocked from addressing journalists at separate press conferences held to announce protections for retirement village residents and funding commitments for a new train station.[1]
The by-election was triggered by the retirement of former minister Paul Papalia last month.[1] On Saturday, at Bethanie Waters retirement village in Port Kennedy, the government unveiled new legislation to protect approximately 25,000 Western Australian retirement village residents.[1] The following day, another government event announced funding for Karratha train station, which is scheduled to begin construction in 2028 and will become the 24th new station under the Metronet project.[1]
Cook responded to criticism over Terri's exclusion by claiming she had already participated in more press conferences than all other candidates combined.[1] The government has already laid 72 kilometres of track and delivered 23 new train stations as part of the Metronet initiative.[1]
