Samsung's semiconductor division is experiencing a substantial exodus of employees to rival SK Hynix, driven by stark compensation disparities and limited career advancement opportunities.[1] SK Hynix is offering employee bonuses of $476,000, dramatically outpacing Samsung's foundry division bonuses which range from $135,000 to $400,000.[1] This pay gap has prompted an alarming 81.5% of Samsung foundry workers to express intentions of leaving within two years, according to a Samsung labor union survey.[1]
The talent drain has already begun in earnest. Samsung labor union chief Choi Seung-ho reported in April that over 200 union members had departed to SK Hynix in the preceding four months.[1] The departures pose a direct threat to Samsung's competitive position in the race to develop advanced HBM4 chips. In response, Samsung secured a court order prohibiting two former chip engineers from working for SK Hynix for 18 months.[1]
SK Hynix is aggressively expanding its workforce to capture Samsung's displaced talent and strengthen its market position. The company added 2,152 employees in the first half of 2026 and plans to double its manufacturing capacity over five years.[1] Meanwhile, Samsung announced plans to hire 60,000 workers over the next five years, with particular focus on the semiconductor sector.[1] These hiring initiatives reflect a broader shortage facing South Korea's semiconductor industry, which is projected to need approximately 304,000 workers by 2031 but faces a shortfall of around 54,000 people.[1]
To address the compensation crisis, Samsung reached an agreement with its labor union in May to allocate 10.5% of annual operating profits from its chip division as employee bonuses, to be distributed over ten years predominantly in company stock vesting within three years.[1]
