Researchers at Fujita Health University in Japan have identified a soybean-derived compound called LPC70 that may protect against the harmful effects of high salt intake on the brain and cardiovascular system.1 When administered to mice on high-salt diets, LPC70 supplementation reduced blood pressure, improved memory retention, and enhanced social interaction.1 The compound comprises more than 70 percent of total phospholipid content and appears to work through selective modulation of prostaglandin signaling pathways in distinct tissue locations.1
The protective mechanisms operate differently across the body.1 In the kidneys, LPC70 decreased expression of COX-2 and the PGE2 receptor EP3, which are associated with salt-related hypertension.1 In the prefrontal cortex of the brain, the compound restored expression of the PGD2 receptor DP1, a receptor linked to neuroprotection and anti-inflammatory signaling.1 Mice maintained on high-salt diets exhibited reduced social interactions and difficulty with object recognition memory prior to LPC70 treatment.1
The study was led by Professor Shinyu Mori and Dr. Hisayoshi Kubota from the Department of Regulatory Assessment and Development of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices at Fujita Health University's Graduate School of Medical Sciences.1 The findings were published on July 1, 2026, in the International Journal of Neurochemistry, Volume 197.1
