In the Harz Mountains of Germany, brothers Immo and Sascha Feldmer have taken over a traditional charcoal production business from their father, continuing a craft that has flourished in the region for more than 1,000 years.1 The brothers operate Harzköhlerei Stemberghaus near the town of Haselfeld, producing charcoal using traditional earthen kilns and beech wood as their primary raw material.1 According to Immo Feldmer, "Our charcoal is, first and foremost, made from pure beech wood."1
The operation produces approximately 40 tons of charcoal annually, which is packaged in 10-kilogram bags and sold primarily to household grilling enthusiasts.1 The traditional kiln method requires constant vigilance day and night to prevent fires, demanding significant labor and dedication from the brothers.1 To supplement their income and broaden their enterprise, the Feldmers have established a museum, shop, and restaurant at their location.1 Looking toward the future, Feldmer expressed hope that the next generation will carry forward the business and protect this centuries-old craft, stating: "We hope our children can take over the operation here and continue to preserve the traditional charcoal-burning craft."1
