Over the past four decades, Qinghai's noodle industry has evolved from informal entrepreneurship into a major economic force. More than 200,000 noodle artisans from Qinghai now operate 31,000 restaurants across China, generating annual revenues exceeding 24 billion yuan, while establishing 118 outlets across 40 countries and regions worldwide.1
The industry's origins trace back to the 1980s, when most entrepreneurs initially adopted the more established Lanzhou noodle brand to launch their businesses.1 In recent years, however, Qinghai noodle restaurants have begun rebranding to establish their distinct regional identity. This transformation has been accompanied by substantial government backing. In June 2025, the Qinghai Noodle Industry Association signed a cooperation agreement with the Germany-China Trade Promotion Association under the Belt and Road Initiative.1 The following June, the Qinghai Market Supervision and Management Bureau released three local standards to establish industry specifications.1 Additionally, Qinghai noodle brands have completed trademark registration with both the European Union and the Madrid System.1
