Consumers are falling victim to a deceptive practice where unlicensed shared charging pod operators deliberately copy the appearance and placement of established brands like Meituan, resulting in accidental rentals and unexpected fees.1 Consumer Ms. Zheng from Xiamen mistakenly borrowed a counterfeit charging pod and was unable to return it through a Meituan charging station, leading to a 99-yuan mandatory purchase charge being deducted from her account.1 Multiple other consumers have reported experiencing similar incidents.1
The knockoff products closely replicate legitimate competitors' designs in several ways. The counterfeit charging pods feature identical or nearly identical logos, color schemes, and cabinet designs to major brand offerings.1 These fake machines are strategically positioned adjacent to or stacked on top of authentic Meituan cabinets, further increasing the likelihood of consumer confusion.1 E-commerce platforms selling these counterfeit units show strong sales activity, with buyers explicitly noting in product reviews that "the appearance closely resembles Meituan's, which increases its appeal."1
Legal experts have weighed in on the conduct. Zhang Qingxin, an attorney at Beijing Yingshan Law Firm, stated that such behavior potentially violates the Anti-Unfair Competition Law.1 Meituan has responded by pursuing legal action against the operators behind the imitation products, with some cases resulting in court victories in the company's favor.1 The platform has also implemented protective measures, including guidance for users who accidentally return pods to wrong stations and billing suspension options in cases of mistaken returns.1
