Hu Min, who entered Xiangtan University's English program at age 15 and was promoted to associate professor at 28 before founding the New Channel International Education Group in 2004, contends that English education should be repositioned away from test-driven instruction.1 According to Hu, the true value of learning English lies in fostering cross-cultural understanding, critical thinking skills, and what he terms "global competence"—the ability to analyze local, global, and cross-cultural issues, understand diverse perspectives and worldviews, interact effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds, and take action for collective well-being and sustainable development.1 "The real worth of studying English is cross-cultural comprehension, critical thinking, and reading the world in another language while expressing China," Hu stated.1
Hu's focus on global competence emerged around 2017, when he began observing increased numbers of Chinese middle and high school students studying abroad.1 In March 2026, he published a new book titled "Future Passport: Global Competence for Adolescents" to further explore this framework.1
