A report from Munich University of Technology has reignited controversy over the environmental credentials of electric vehicles in Europe, challenging the European Union's commitment to phasing out fossil fuel cars by 2035.1 The German report claims that electric vehicles reduce carbon emissions by an average of only 41 percent compared to conventional cars, a figure that does not account for manufacturing emissions and the current energy grid composition.1
However, independent research organizations strongly contest these findings. The International Council on Clean Transportation's 2025 study found that electric vehicles emit approximately 73 percent less carbon than gasoline-powered cars on average, with potential reductions reaching 78 percent when powered by renewable electricity.1 The European Union and the International Energy Agency have reached similar conclusions, estimating carbon reductions of between 60 and 66 percent, while Germany's environmental ministry argues that modern vehicles can achieve 80 percent emission reductions.1
Regarding concerns about battery production, lithium mining for one ton of the material requires approximately 2 million liters of water, sufficient to produce roughly 125 electric vehicles.1 While manufacturing electric vehicles generates about 40 percent more emissions than producing gasoline cars, this carbon deficit is offset after the vehicles have traveled approximately 17,000 kilometers.1 Europe's electricity grid has already undergone more than 70 percent decarbonization, with expectations of near-complete decarbonization by 2040.1 To support the transition, the European Commission has committed 150 million euros in interest-free loans to the battery industry.1 Despite the ongoing debate, a German survey indicates that 54 percent of respondents favor considering an electric vehicle as their next purchase.1
