The 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, released on September 8, 2026, reveal a stark decline in academic achievement across the world's 15-year-old students.14 The test covered 91 countries and regions, evaluating over 760,000 students in reading, mathematics, and science.14
In OECD member nations, reading scores dropped 28 points between 2015 and 2025—equivalent to one year of learning—while mathematics fell 22 points and science declined 7 points.14 Non-OECD participating countries experienced smaller but still significant declines, with reading scores down 16 points and mathematics down 8 points over the same period.4 Approximately 29 percent of 15-year-old students in OECD countries are now classified as "low performers" across all three subjects.14
The decline was particularly severe in some nations. Iceland and Slovenia saw reading scores fall by more than 50 points, making them among the hardest hit in the OECD.14 Only five countries bucked the global trend, with reading scores increasing: Qatar (+11 points), Brunei (+18 points), Cambodia (+26 points), the Philippines (+27 points), and Zambia (+50 points).4 England's teenagers outperformed peers in most countries across mathematics, reading, and science, placing the nation among the few to avoid the widespread decline.3
Germany experienced a notable setback, with reading scores falling 15 points between 2022 and 2025, mathematics dropping 11 points, and science declining 7 points, ranking 24th in reading, 26th in mathematics, and 23rd in science globally.14 Australia's public school students lag behind their independent school counterparts by approximately two and a half years in reading and mathematics, while the country also faces among the world's worst classroom discipline issues.2
The OECD attributed part of the decline to "digital disruption," noting that more than 40 percent of students reported using artificial intelligence to draft homework assignments at least once or twice weekly or daily.14 Students using AI chatbots showed lower average science scores compared to those who did not.14 However, parental engagement appeared beneficial: when parents asked their children at least weekly about what they had learned or accomplished at school, students' science scores averaged 26 points higher.4
