The president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), Xu Yangsheng, has outlined what he considers the core mission of university education, arguing that students should master three fundamental competencies: acquiring knowledge, learning how to learn, and developing character.1
In articulating his educational philosophy, Xu distinguished between knowledge acquisition at the university level and secondary education, emphasizing that higher learning demands systematic, specialized, and logically rigorous study rather than rote memorization.1 He noted that while knowledge learned in university has a limited shelf life, the capacity to learn independently represents a lifelong asset.1 According to Xu, more than 90 percent of the work challenges graduates face in their careers cannot be addressed by knowledge gained during their university years alone.1
The development of character forms the third pillar of Xu's framework for university education.1 He emphasized that worldviews and values are substantially formed between ages 14 and 20, making the university years a critical period for shaping complete personalities as students navigate a crowded world and discover their own place within it.1 Drawing on Chinese philosophical tradition, Xu invoked the principle that "one must first establish one's heart and aspirations before establishing one's position in society."1 He concluded by asserting that while talent determines a person's potential ceiling, moral character and integrity permanently define their floor.1
