A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Flores Island in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province on Saturday morning, claiming at least five lives.[2][3] The epicenter was located approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Mbai town in offshore waters, with a depth of 15 kilometers.[3] Buildings collapsed across the affected areas, with victims reportedly struck by falling debris while sleeping.[2] The provincial governor, Emmanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, confirmed that the five fatalities came from two districts: two from Sikka regency and three from Manggarai regency.[3]
The initial earthquake was followed by multiple aftershocks, with the strongest measuring 6.1 in magnitude.[2] A tsunami warning was issued but lifted approximately three hours later.[2] Rescue and relief efforts were mobilized to assist trapped residents, and around 2,000 residents from Nagekeo were evacuated.[2] The powerful tremor also caused road damage and landslides on Flores Island, disrupting transportation in parts of the province.[3]
