Government members from Queensland's north and far north are championing an expansion of bail-breach legislation following a fatal car accident.[1] Savanna Spencer-Page, 25, died in a crash in Cairns last Wednesday, in an incident involving 36-year-old Jack Edward Vaughn, who was out on bail at the time.[1]
The proposed reform would extend existing breach-of-bail penalties currently applied only to juvenile offenders to include adult offenders as well.[1] Member of Parliament Bree James has called for mandatory minimum sentences for those who violate bail conditions, stating: "I now call for bail reform to be extended to adults with mandatory minimum periods of imprisonment for those who breach bail."[1] Three MPs—Wade Chiesa, Terry James, and Bree James—are leading efforts to push the legislative change forward.[1] The Queensland government has committed to passing legislation extending the policy to adult offenders by year's end.[1]
