Ukraine faces a critical shortage of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles as it struggles to counter escalating Russian ballistic missile attacks.[1] On August 1, 2026, Russia launched 27 ballistic missiles, of which Ukraine intercepted only one.[1] Four days later, on August 4, Russia fired 24 ballistic missiles and four Zircon hypersonic missiles, all of which went unintercepted.[1] The Ukrainian Defense Ministry estimates that Russia currently possesses the capacity to launch 100 ballistic missiles monthly without depleting its stockpile.[1]
To address this mounting crisis, Ukraine is pursuing multiple solutions. President Trump has agreed to provide Ukraine with licensing for Patriot interceptor missile production.[1] Lockheed Martin supplied 620 PAC-3 MSE interceptor missiles globally in 2025 and plans to increase annual production capacity to 2,000 units over the next seven years.[1] Ukraine's ambassador to the United States estimates that establishing domestic Patriot missile production would require between 12 months and five years.[1] Meanwhile, Ukraine received only one-third of the air defense missiles in 2026 compared to 2025.[1]
Ukraine is also developing indigenous solutions. Firepoint is developing the Freya interceptor missile, designed to cost less than one million euros, with a prototype completion target of the first half of 2027.[1] Russia produces approximately 60–65 Iskander-M missiles monthly, exceeding 700 units annually.[1] Since late 2023, North Korea has supplied Russia with roughly 150 ballistic missiles.[1]
