Victoria's Liberal Party has pledged to reinstate weekly garbage collection across all councils if it wins the state election in November.[1] Party leader Jess Wilson criticized the current fortnightly collection system, telling 3AW radio on Monday that "to be honest — it's disgusting."[1]
Currently, 33 councils across Victoria have transitioned from weekly to fortnightly red bin collections as part of a waste management reform.[1] Councils implementing the change have largely introduced weekly food and garden organic waste (FOGO) collections alongside the reduced red bin schedule.[1] The shift has yielded measurable environmental results: Boroondara, Knox, Manningham, and Monash reduced landfill waste by an average of 19 percent in the reform's first year.[1] The state government introduced the fortnightly system citing reduced landfill volumes and environmental benefits, with individual councils such as Merri-bek projecting savings of A$16 million over a decade, while increasing standard bin capacity from 80 to 120 liters.[1]
The Victorian government announced its garbage collection reforms in 2020 and mandated implementation of a four-bin system—including a new purple-lidded glass bin—by July 1, 2027.[1] In response, the Liberal Party has committed to reviewing the landfill tax and making the purple bin optional if elected.[1]
