A student athlete at Maumelle High School in Arkansas discovered a two-foot-long cottonmouth snake—the state's second deadliest venomous species—inside his helmet following practice.[1] The snake had remained in the helmet for approximately an hour before being detected.[1] Police responded by flushing water into the helmet to force the snake out, after which the state's animal management department relocated the reptile to a wooded area away from the school.[1]
The student escaped without injury and was able to continue his practice session using a different helmet.[1] Chris Davis, director of the animal management department, expressed his astonishment at the incident, stating: "It was unreal. You had to kind of be there and take pictures to say this was real."[1]
