Tropical Storm Baiji, though weakened from its typhoon status, unleashed extreme rainfall across Beijing on August 11, 2026, as the system transported warm and moist air into the region.[1] In the Houshayu area of Shunyi District, hourly precipitation reached 88.5 millimeters, exceeding one-sixth of Beijing's annual average rainfall of 528 millimeters and meeting the threshold for rainstorm conditions.[1]
Meteorological experts attributed the intense precipitation to the combined effects of warm, moist air transported by the tropical storm, cold air masses from the north, and the topographic influence of the Taihang and Yanshan mountain ranges.[1] According to Xu Xiaofeng, president of the China Meteorological Service Association, "the warm and moist air it transported, working together with cold air from the north and the mountain terrain, created this rainfall."[1] Looking ahead, forecasters expect August precipitation across Beijing to exceed historical averages for the same period by 20 to 30 percent.[1]
