Taiwan's population dropped to approximately 23.235 million in July 2026, marking the 31st consecutive month of decline, according to statistics released by Taiwan authorities on August 10.[1] The demographic challenge intensified as births fell to 7,906 in July, representing an annual decrease of approximately 11.56%, while deaths exceeded 17,000.[1]
The first seven months of 2026 revealed an alarming trend, with 54,250 newborns recorded—a decline of over 10,000 compared to the same period in 2025, or roughly 15.65% fewer births year-over-year.[1] Deaths during this period surpassed 110,000, more than double the number of births.[1] On average, Taiwan's population declined by approximately 282 people per day compared to the previous year, with the total loss exceeding 100,000 residents.[1]
The aging crisis has become increasingly pronounced, with seniors aged 65 and above comprising over 20% of the population at approximately 4.773 million people as of July 2026.[1] By contrast, the youth population aged 0 to 14 numbers roughly 2.625 million, representing just 11.3% of the total.[1] These demographic shifts portend significant challenges ahead, as Taiwan's primary school enrollment is projected to fall below one million by the 2029 academic year.[1]
