A former Thai lawmaker was arrested on Monday morning following a shooting at the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization office that left one person dead and another injured.[1] Chalong Riewraeng, the suspect, opened fire around 11 a.m., fatally shooting Thongchai Yenprasert, the organization's administrative chief, who died at a hospital from gunshot wounds to the face and neck.[1] Yenprasert's driver was also struck in the arm but remained in stable condition.[1]
Chalong told authorities that the shooting stemmed from a financial dispute with the victim.[1] In a statement, he said: "I want to apologize to the people of Nonthaburi. I had no intention. We were friends, and I thought we could talk things through, but he was unwilling to speak with me."[1] According to Chalong's account, Yenprasert's driver drew a gun on him, prompting him to open fire.[1] Police believe the incident was motivated by personal grievances.[1]
The shooting occurred days after a separate mass casualty event in the same province, when a 14-year-old student killed at least eight people at Debsirin Nonthaburi School and in a residential setting, including a 12-year-old girl, five school staff members, and two grandparents, before apparently taking his own life.[1] Thailand has a civilian gun ownership rate of approximately 15.1 firearms per 100 people as of 2017, second only to Pakistan in Asia,[1] and recorded a gun death rate of 3.49 per 100,000 people in 2023.[1]
