A domestic abuse survivor was attacked in her hotel room after staff at a London Travelodge provided her abuser with access to her accommodation without verifying his identity.[1] The woman had sought refuge at the hotel in October 2025 to escape domestic violence, but the receptionist handed over her room key after the perpetrator falsely claimed his girlfriend was having a seizure upstairs.[1] Once inside, the man kicked down the door, assaulted the woman, and attempted to seize her mobile phone.[1]
Travelodge has acknowledged that the incident resulted from a failure to follow proper procedures.[1] The hotel chain commissioned an independent review led by senior counsel Paul Greaney KC and has since revised its room access security policy and strengthened staff training this year.[1] This incident echoes a 2022 case at a Maidenhead Travelodge location, where a man gained a room key by posing as a female guest's boyfriend and subsequently sexually assaulted her; the victim received only £30 in compensation.[1] Following these cases, members of parliament have written to Travelodge urging a comprehensive review of its women's safety policies.[1]
