A former Thai lawmaker opened fire at a local government office in Nonthaburi Province, outside Bangkok, on Monday morning, killing the provincial governor Thongchai Yenpraseert.[1] The shooting occurred around 11 a.m. local time on August 10, 2026.[1] The suspect was arrested by Thai police following the incident.[1]
The attack marks the second major gun violence incident in Thailand within days, following a shooting by a 14-year-old that killed nine people and wounded more than 20 others.[1] In response to the rising violence, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated his intention to tighten gun control laws.[1] Thailand currently has approximately 15 firearms per 100 residents, the highest rate in Southeast Asia.[1] Under existing gun regulations, individuals aged 20 and older are permitted to own firearms, though the law does not require psychological health screening.[1]
