New South Wales Education Minister Prue Car has announced a sweeping overhaul of the Higher School Certificate (HSC) that will prohibit Year 12 students from completing unsupervised take-home assessment tasks.[1] The ban is set to take effect next term, making New South Wales the first Australian jurisdiction to implement such a measure.[1] The decision responds to over 1,000 instances of cheating detected in 2025 HSC subject tasks, with the majority of these cases linked to take-home assignments.[1]
Under the reformed structure, final examinations will continue to account for 50 percent of the total HSC score, with subject tasks comprising the remaining 50 percent.[1] Car emphasized that maintaining the HSC's standing as a highly trusted qualification depends on whether it accurately reflects students' knowledge, capabilities, and understanding.[1] Subjects with significant project components, such as arts and technology disciplines, may receive exemptions from the prohibition.[1]
The move addresses concerns raised by generative artificial intelligence's widespread adoption since 2022.[1] Federal Education Minister Jason Clare has indicated that the technology must become an integral part of the education landscape.[1]
