The governor of Nigeria's Kano State, Abubakar Kabir Yusuf, organized a large-scale mass wedding ceremony uniting approximately 1,500 couples on August 9, 2026.[1] The initiative was designed to support low-income families and individuals who had lost relatives, with the aim of strengthening families and promoting social stability across the state.[1]
Each bride received a dowry of 200,000 Nigerian naira, equivalent to approximately $147, along with entrepreneurial support to help establish livelihoods.[1] The newlyweds were also provided with household essentials including beds and mattresses.[1] According to Governor Yusuf, the program was intended "to help women who might not be able to afford weddings, while simultaneously strengthening families and promoting social stability in the state."[1]
The mass wedding brought together people from diverse circumstances, including some who had experienced significant personal tragedy. Among the participants was Haruna Bashir, who lost his wife and six children in violent attacks earlier in the year.[1] This marked the second mass wedding organized by Yusuf's administration.[1]
