The Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater in Kyiv has introduced a new production titled "Odysseus, Maeotis," which reimagines Homer’s epic poem "The Odyssey" as a contemporary narrative of the war in Ukraine 1. The play explores themes of soldiers' return, territorial reclamation, and identity, replacing the mythical monsters of the original epic with drones and robotic war machines 1.
The production features a cast of both professional actors and active-duty soldiers, including active-duty serviceman Daniil Mireshkin in the lead role of Odysseus and Daryna Leheida as Penelope 1. Directed by Ivan Uryvskyi, the script was developed from a year of interviews with former prisoners of war and is based on the experiences of Azov Regiment defenders and captives 1.
