Sheikh Shadi Al-Sulaiman, chair of the National Imams Council of Australia, has called for the establishment of imam training programs within Australia to help religious leaders better integrate into local culture and language. [1] Speaking before the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion, Al-Sulaiman warned that Islamophobia incidents have increased by more than 600 percent since an Islamophobia Incident Registry was established in 2022. [1]
The National Imams Council is currently constructing an Islamic institute for higher education aimed at developing imams and religious leaders who have been "born or raised in Australia." [1] Al-Sulaiman, who was among 30 global religious leaders named on an ISIS kill list in 2017, stated that his organization has stood in solidarity with the Jewish community following the Bondi Beach attack, which resulted in 15 deaths and saw suspect Naveed Akram face charges related to radicalization.
