Dutch-based Accell Group, which owns the storied Raleigh bicycle brand, initiated insolvency proceedings on Wednesday after failing to secure a buyer for the company.[1] The group, which was acquired by American private equity firm KKR for €1.4 billion in 2022, has been unable to develop a viable restructuring plan amid intense competition from Chinese manufacturers and declining bicycle demand in the post-pandemic period.[1]
Raleigh, established in 1887 and once the world's largest bicycle manufacturer, was acquired by Accell for $100 million in 2012.[1] The brand represents a significant portion of Accell's portfolio, which also includes Lapierre and Ghost bicycles.[1] After control of Accell was transferred to creditors in February, the company pursued acquisition negotiations with Dutech Holdings and Tri Star Group, but these talks ultimately collapsed.[1]
