China's A-share market displayed mixed performance on August 6, with the Shanghai Composite Index rising 0.57 percent to surpass the 3,900-point level, while the Shenzhen Component Index declined 0.24 percent and the ChiNext Index fell 0.55 percent.[1][2] More than 2,700 individual stocks advanced on the day, and total market turnover reached approximately 2.55 trillion yuan.[2]
The coal sector emerged as the standout performer, gaining 4.88 percent, with multiple stocks including Hao Hua Energy, Lu'an Environmental Energy, Huaibei Mining, and Pingmei Shares hitting daily trading limits.[1] Analysts attributed the strength to surging electricity demand driven by recent high temperatures. According to a Fangzheng Securities analyst, "The recent high-temperature weather has driven continuous growth in China's electricity demand, which in turn has bolstered coal prices. August is expected to see further room for growth in overall social electricity consumption."[1] Between July 27 and 31, power grids in North China and Northeast China, as well as provincial grids in Tianjin, Hebei North, Jiangsu, Liaoning, and East Mongolia, repeatedly set new load records.[1] Looking ahead, analysts suggest that growing electricity demands from artificial intelligence industries could provide medium to long-term support for coal consumption growth.[1]
