August 2026 will bring a remarkable convergence of astronomical events, with a total solar eclipse and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower occurring on the same day.[1] On August 12, a total solar eclipse will traverse Russia's northern regions, Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, and portions of Portugal, while partial eclipse visibility will extend to parts of the United States from Alaska to North Carolina.[1] The same date marks the arrival of a new moon, creating ideal dark skies for observing the Perseid meteor shower, which will reach its peak on August 12–13.[1]
Venus will reach its greatest eastern elongation between August 14–16, appearing brilliantly in the western sky after sunset.[1] Later in the month, a deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible across North America, South America, and portions of Europe and Africa on August 27–28, with the moon positioned approximately 93 percent within Earth's umbra at maximum eclipse.[1] Observers planning to view the solar eclipse are advised to use certified eclipse glasses or appropriate solar observation equipment.[1]
