Gatwick Airport will move forward with developing a second runway after local activists' legal challenge was rejected by the courts.[1] The Court of Appeal upheld a High Court ruling on Tuesday, dismissing a judicial review application brought by opponents of the expansion.[1]
The £2.2 billion project has received approval from Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander.[1] The airport expects the new runway to accommodate approximately 100,000 additional flights annually and aims to have it operational before 2030.[1] Gatwick Airport Chief Executive Pierre-Hugues Schmit described the court decision as ending "eight years of planning and legal proceedings."[1] The government has committed over £219 million in investment toward green fuel production to support the expansion.[1]
Separately, all legal obstacles have been cleared for Luton Airport's expansion plans, with the Supreme Court rejecting all appeals against that project.[1] Luton's expansion is projected to increase the airport's annual passenger capacity from 19 million to 32 million.[1]
