A serious food safety incident has emerged in Kangbao County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province, where vendors illegally treated cabbage with formaldehyde solution for preservation before shipping the contaminated vegetables to other regions.1 The Kangbao County government confirmed the incident's authenticity following initial investigation, and public security authorities have taken coercive measures against the individuals and vehicles involved.1 Officials have launched an urgent trace operation to determine where the treated cabbage has been distributed.1
In response to this violation, China's State Council Food Safety Committee Office, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and State Administration for Market Regulation have demanded swift and stringent handling of the case, with orders to trace the destination of all affected cabbage and prevent contaminated products from entering the market.2 The authorities have simultaneously instructed all regions to immediately conduct special sampling inspections and market surveys of cabbage and other perishable vegetables.2 Formaldehyde, classified as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization, poses severe health risks when encountered in substantial quantities, causing damage to the respiratory, digestive, circulatory, and nervous systems, and potentially inducing leukemia and cancer.1 Chinese law explicitly prohibits the use of formaldehyde as a food processing aid in production and commercial operations.1
This is not an isolated incident in China. Similar cases have surfaced previously, including a 2012 incident in Shandong Province involving formaldehyde-sprayed cabbage, and the seizure of over 120 tons of contaminated cabbage in Guangzhou.1 Additionally, formaldehyde-treated cabbage was discovered at a vegetable wholesale market in Dingzhou, Hebei Province last year.1
