Greek police are investigating the killing of a 38-year-old Scottish charity worker whose body was discovered inside a suitcase in Athens.[1] A 26-year-old Afghan man, Sharif Ahmadzai, has been charged with intentional homicide in connection with the death of Elizabeth-Jane Ross.[1] While Ahmadzai has admitted to transporting the victim's body in the suitcase and using her credit card to withdraw €10,000 from an ATM, he has denied committing the murder.[1]
According to police, Ross last made contact on the evening of July 15, and her body was found three days later on July 18.[1] Authorities believe the conflict may have arisen after Ross discovered Ahmadzai stealing her belongings or following a possible sexual assault, based on investigative assessments.[1] A medical examiner determined that Ross likely died by suffocation.[1] CCTV footage recorded Ahmadzai's movements with the suitcase on the evening of July 16.[1] Ross had arrived in Athens on June 26 and moved into an apartment on July 10.[1]
Ahmadzai is married to Elena Hall, an American citizen, who alerted police to his suspicious behavior.[1]
