During summer breaks, many Chinese families have increasingly turned to smartphones and tablets as substitute caregivers for their children, creating what experts describe as a troubling trend in early childhood development.[1] According to Lü Bo, director of the Family Education Research Institute at Northeast Normal University, electronic devices have become the lowest-cost and quickest-effect "temporary babysitter" for numerous households.[1] The 2026 National Preschool Education Publicity Month campaign has advocated that kindergartens should not replace picture books and toys with children's digital products, highlighting official concern over this practice.[1]
Child development researchers have outlined specific health risks associated with excessive screen exposure at young ages. Ma Jinxiang from the China Youth Research Center recommends that infants under two years old should avoid screens as much as possible, while children aged two to five should limit daily screen time to no more than one hour.[1] Evidence from clinical observation shows a common pattern among children with language development delays: nearly all have experienced early or excessive electronic product use.[1] Furthermore, a significant proportion of adolescent internet addiction issues can be traced back to digital media habits formed during early childhood.[1] Experts emphasize the need for coordinated efforts among families, schools, industry, and government to establish comprehensive safeguards against these developmental risks.
