Bubble memory emerged as a revolutionary non-volatile computer storage technology in the 1970s, utilizing magnetic thin films to retain data.[1] Andrew Bobeck led the development of this technology at Bell Labs,[1] which unveiled an experimental device in 1974.[1] The innovation generated significant hope that bubble memory might serve as a universal storage solution across the computing industry.
Commercial adoption began when Texas Instruments introduced the TIB 0103, the first commercial bubble memory product, in 1977 with a capacity of 92 kilobits.[1] Intel followed in 1979 with a 1-megabit version, the 7110.[1] The technology saw further advancement with a 4-megabit variant launched in 1983,[1] and found niche applications in arcade gaming systems such as the Konami Bubble System in 1984,[1] as well as early personal computers including the Fujitsu FM-8 in 1981[1] and the Sharp PC 5000 series in 1983.[1] However, high manufacturing costs proved prohibitive—gadolinium gallium garnet wafers cost approximately $100 per unit in 1982.[1]
Despite early promise, bubble memory rapidly lost ground to advancing semiconductor and hard drive technologies. By 1981, major manufacturers including Rockwell, National Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, and Plessey had exited the bubble memory market.[1] The technology was completely abandoned by the late 1980s,[1] leaving only scattered traces in specialized applications.
