NASA's Perseverance rover recorded a historic moment on July 2, 2026, when it photographed Earth vanishing behind Phobos, Mars's moon, using its Mastcam-Z instrument.1 This marks the first time humanity has documented Earth disappearing behind another celestial body as seen from the surface of another planet.1
At the time of observation, Earth appeared as a single pixel-sized point of light in the Martian sky, located approximately 195 million miles from the rover.1 Phobos, orbiting Mars at a distance of 4,850 miles from the planet's surface, completely eclipsed Earth as it passed in front of it.1 The observation occurred around 7 p.m. local solar time at the rover's location on the rim of Jezero Crater, on Mars sol 1907.1
The geometry of this rare alignment showcases the vast distances involved in interplanetary observation. Phobos, with a width of approximately 17 miles, appears only about one-third the angular size of Earth's Moon as viewed from Earth.1 Despite its small apparent size, Phobos was large enough to fully obscure the distant point of light representing Earth.1 Earth remained continuously visible in the Martian sky for several months, and Phobos crosses the Martian sky three times daily, creating multiple opportunities for such alignments.1
