China's People's Liberation Army Navy's Zheng He warship, the nation's first ocean-going training vessel, has served as a crucial platform for military talent development since its commissioning in 1987.[1] Over its operational history, the ship has trained and deployed more than 50,000 outstanding military personnel for the navy.[1] The vessel, bearing pennant number 81, has accumulated over 600,000 nautical miles of voyage—equivalent to circumnavigating the Earth 28 times.[1]
The Zheng He has become indispensable to the navy's officer development pipeline.[1] Among the navy's active surface ship commanding officers, approximately two out of every three have undergone practical training aboard the vessel.[1] At the senior command level, more than half of naval captains and above-ranking commanding officers have graduated from service on the Zheng He.[1] The ship bridges the gap between classroom instruction and operational deck positions through innovative teaching methods, including practical drills and smart classrooms, continuously shortening the distance between academy curricula and shipboard battle stations.[1]
