Liu Zhiyu won a gold medal at the 47th International Mathematical Olympiad in 2006 with a perfect score.[1] Beginning in his high school sophomore summer, he suffered from severe dry eye syndrome and visual fatigue, with the condition intensifying through his junior year and into his second year of university.[1] Despite receiving a full scholarship to MIT in 2010, Liu chose to enter monastic life instead of pursuing mathematics research.[1] After more than a decade of spiritual practice, he made the definitive decision to return to secular life in 2022.[1]
Today, Liu works as a psychological counselor, integrating his monastic experiences and Buddhist philosophy into his practice to help contemporary individuals address their inner struggles through a fusion of traditional culture and psychology.[1] Upon leaving monastic life, his weight had dropped below 50 kilograms, but has since recovered to over 70 kilograms.[1] Reflecting on his unconventional choices, Liu stated: "My life at this moment is very abundant, and I am very satisfied."[1] Looking ahead, he plans to publish a book next year that incorporates classical works such as the Great Learning and the Doctrine of the Mean.[1] He also envisions developing "Wisdom Healing Encyclopedia," a project that would leverage artificial intelligence to reconnect knowledge with human life.[1]
