Australian universities are increasingly establishing offshore campuses to diversify revenue streams as they face income constraints from domestic restrictions on international student enrollment.[1] The University of New South Wales launched its Bangalore campus last Friday, marking a significant expansion into the Indian education market.[1]
The move reflects the financial stakes involved in international education for Australian institutions.[1] Last year, Australian universities collectively earned 5 billion Australian dollars from international students, with UNSW and the University of Sydney each generating 1.7 billion dollars.[1] However, the expansion carries considerable risks.[1] India's population of 140 million includes only 45 million households with annual incomes exceeding 100,000 dollars—a limited pool of families who can afford international education.[1] Additionally, the number of Indian students in Australia declined by 10 percent, dropping from 126,841 in 2025.[1]
UNSW's Bangalore campus offers degree programs at one-quarter to one-half the cost of equivalent Australian courses, positioning the institution competitively in the local market.[1] Australia's Prime Minister supported the initiative, stating during a recent meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Melbourne that "Australian university campuses in India are the cornerstone of our education partnership."[1] Yet Australia's historical track record with offshore campuses is mixed, with most previous ventures in Singapore, Canada, and South Africa having been closed or sold.[1]
