Google DeepMind's renowned AlphaFold research team has been dismantled, with approximately one-quarter of its core members departing the organization.[1] Leading the exodus are John Jumper and Jonas Adler, the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureates.[1] Both researchers announced their departure on June 19 and have joined Anthropic, ending their tenures at DeepMind after nearly nine years.[1] Alexander Pritzel and other key contributors to the original AlphaFold research have similarly moved to Anthropic.[1]
The restructuring marks a significant shift in DeepMind's strategic direction. Remaining scientists have been reassigned to diverse projects including Gemini large language model development, enzyme design and genomics research, nuclear fusion control research, and work at Isomorphic Labs.[1] In response to the departures, Pushmeet Kohli, head of Google DeepMind's scientific teams, stated on July 29 that the scientific team had not undergone a transformation but rather experienced "functional expansion."[1]
