Shaw University's divinity school has announced the launch of the first Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Artificial Intelligence and Moral Agency, marking a pioneering step in theological education.[1] The program, which will begin in January 2025, represents the first such master's or doctoral offering across the entire network of the Association of Theological Schools, comprising approximately 300 graduate theological institutions in the United States.[1]
The initiative received regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges in June 2024.[1] Prospective students must hold a master's degree and possess at least five years of relevant professional experience; the doctoral degree is expected to take three to four years to complete.[1] Dean Mark Harden characterized the program as Shaw University's "second mission," emphasizing its commitment to building AI literacy education aimed at serving vulnerable communities.[1] The university has already received expressions of interest from at least 66 prospective applicants.[1]
