Victoria's government and opposition are both reconsidering the state's largest infrastructure project, the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL), amid serious concerns about the scheme despite billions already invested.[1] Premier Ben Carroll and Opposition Leader Jess Wilson have signaled reservations about proceeding with the A$14.45 billion contract network, each seeking potential pathways to exit the project.[1]
The SRL East component carries an official budget of A$345 billion as calculated in 2021.[1] The state has already committed A$25 billion to early engineering works, while two consortiums have been selected to undertake A$53 billion in tunnel construction.[1] The government has entered into contracts with builders extending to 2035 and beyond.[1] The project was conceived in secret during Daniel Andrews' tenure as premier, originally code-named "Operation Halo."[1]
Opposition Leader Jess Wilson indicated that an incoming Coalition government would suspend and review the project following an election victory in November.[1] Premier Ben Carroll stated the matter would require cabinet consideration, claiming his government values public funds and will not breach contracts.[1]
