Proliferating work group chats have become a mounting source of stress for many professionals, with some drowning in hundreds of messaging channels daily. A cross-border e-commerce customer service representative named Tang Meng, who has worked in the field for two years, manages nearly 10,000 WeChat groups and must coordinate matters across more than 100 of them, with peak days seeing over 5,000 group messages.1 Similarly, Su, an operations specialist in the online television industry in Guangxi, maintains more than 120 work groups, with over 30 actively exchanging information on any given day.1
The persistent expectation to remain digitally available is raising concerns about workers' right to disconnect. Jiang Yiqin, deputy head of the civil litigation division at Beijing's Daxing District People's Court, clarified the legal standards for identifying hidden overtime work, emphasizing that two core elements must be present: whether the overtime instruction was arranged by the employer and whether the worker expended substantive labor effort.1 According to Jiang, "Workers are entitled by law to rest and vacation time, and employers cannot treat 'being constantly online' as an implicit obligation of workers, nor can they impose penalties, wage cuts, or other measures against workers for failing to respond promptly to group messages outside working hours."1 Ren Feng, director of the psychiatry department at Beijing Shougang Hospital affiliated with Peking University, recommends that workers consolidate group message responses into fixed time slots to avoid remaining in a perpetual state of reactivity.1
